Rangoli is a tradition that's closely tied to women and is often made during festivals. The word "rangoli" comes from the Sanskrit word rangavalli, which means "rows of colors". Rangoli is believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Rangoli is meant to welcome guests. It's drawn to celebrate auspicious occasions like Diwali, Onam, and Pongal. Rangoli is made using materials like rice flour, chalk, flower petals, and colored sand. Designs can include geometric shapes, floral shapes, or religious symbols. Stencils, piping tools, and sieves may be used to create the designs. Every state of India has a way of making Rangoli. In South India, Rangoli is known as Kolam. In Rajasthan, the Mandana are drawn on walls. In Kolkata, Alpana is drawn in the courtyard. Rangoli is now a part of popular culture because of Indian diaspora found even in space.
